Global Temperatures Are Rising

Annual global temperatures could exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels over the next five years, according to the World Meteorological Organization. Their predictions spell bad news for the goal laid out under the 2015 Paris climate accord of halting global warming below 2 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. Surpassing the 1.5 degrees threshold could lead to higher sea levels, worse droughts and rainfall extremes, and food shortages for millions, with almost all regions already likely to be warmer than the recent past.
