Gulf Of Mexico Weekly Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly

Currently the surface temperature of Gulf Of Mexico is +2°C warmer then it should be! The implication of this on Hurricane season (only 6 weeks away) isn’t exactly known but using our best scientific understanding we can say pretty certainly that it won’t be good. For those of you who don’t know; Hurricanes thrive in warm water! This means that the Gulf Of Mexico may literally “power up” a hurricane that enters it if the water is warm enough.

But there’s more, hot water in the gulf is moves along the Gulf Stream, which drifts up the east coast of the United States and across the North Atlantic to Europe, bringing warm air with it. Warmer water in the gulf means warmer water in the Gulf Stream which means the East Coast is at risk of more devastating hurricanes.
